Cinco de Mayo festival

cinco de mayo festival

Cinco de Mayo is a very popular festival among many Americans, as it means food, drinks and entertainment to them. Although it is a Mexican tradition in origins, the Americans, especially those on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, have adapted the festival to their lifestyles. Surprisingly enough, Cinco de mayo is not so much prevalent in Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo, literally translated in Spanish, means “Five of May”. Mexicans celebrate this day commemorating their unlikely victory over France at the battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862. The French forces, under the leadership of Napoleon III had to come to Mexico to collect war debt from them.

As with any celebrations, people engage in the festivities mainly because of the gourmet, wine, dance, parties, and some time off to spend with their friends and families. In the case of Cinco de Mayo, the party is incomplete without a glass of margarita.

The festival was started by Mexican miners in California. When they received news of their victory over the French, they were ecstatic and celebrated with fireworks, songs and victory speeches. The immense popularity of the festival is now catching up among all classes of people. Event organizers are cashing in on the various opportunities presented by Cinco de Mayo. Nowadays, concerts are held, live events are organized and themed ceremonies scheduled. The most popular attraction, however is the traditional parade. Revelers enjoy the day singing and dancing in traditional Mexican attire on the streets.

Restaurants and bars in most cities worldwide observe the festival by including Mexican cuisine, drinks and activities for the day. One can find an array of shops, down almost every street in Manhattan taking part in the festivities by showcasing Mexican culture. Fairs are also organized this day, to encourage trade for small Mexican businesses, and to display festive traditions.
